July 2025 Media Distributor Gauge: YouTube Widens Its Lead

According to the latest Nielsen Media Distributor Gauge for July, YouTube’s streaming dominance has now extended to its sixth consecutive month. The streamer also widened the gap between itself and its closest competitor, The Walt Disney Company, during the just-concluded month.

The latest report, which examines total viewing consumption through television screens by media distributors across broadcast, cable, and streaming, found that YouTube’s July lead has grown to 13.4%, a +0.6% improvement from the previous month. This is the largest month-to-month increase in the chart.

YouTube’s separation from its competitors is the largest lead by a media company to date, according to Nielsen’s calculations, which began in November 2023.

Two streamers, Netflix (No. 3) and The Roku Channel (No. 9), tied for the second-largest growth for the month, as they both had +0.3% gains, standing at 8.8% and 2.8%, respectively.

Netflix continues to benefit from the no-school summer season as it had the largest volume gain across all streaming platforms in July, increasing its average minute audience by an additional 215,000 viewers compared to the previous month. In addition, it was also the only streaming platform to exhibit an increase across all viewing demographic categories month over month. Meanwhile, The Roku Channel experienced the largest monthly usage increase across all streaming platforms, with a +7.5% increase compared to June.

Disney was in second place in the chart in terms of total TV usage, falling by -0.6% to finish at 9.4%, which was the steepest decline among all media companies featured in the chart.

NBCUniversal remained in the No. 4 position, finishing with 7.6%, a -0.2% decrease in total viewing consumption. It was followed by Paramount Global, which remained in fifth place with 7.0%, also down -0.2% from the previous month.

The remaining half of the chart featured Fox Corp at No. 6 with 6.5% of all TV usage. This was a -0.4% decline from June. Following it was Warner Bros. Discovery with a 6.1% showing, down -0.3% from the previous month.

Amazon took eighth place, gaining +0.2% in TV usage in July to finish at 3.9%. At No. 9 was the Roku Channel, and Scripps had a 2.2% share, showing some growth with a +0.2% increase from June.
